Willamette Valley wineries are known for two things: Great wine, and an incredible community.

We are lucky, in that, with all the chaos that’s happening in the world right now, great wine and an incredible community are exactly what we all need. To share that spirit with all of you, we created #WVCommunity.

Here will be highlighting fantastic offers, words of wisdom from our winemakers, Spotify playlists, recipes, and virtual events. And don’t miss our May Theme Weeks, where we’re highlighting 50 special wines on a theme for purchase every week as part of Memorial Weekend from Wine Country.

As our wineries very slowly reopen, be sure to check out our reopening guide to see the list of open tasting rooms and learn what to expect.

The days are long but the years are short, might as well enjoy a nice glass of wine. Lately I’ve been enjoying this Rose from stollerwine! After the babes are in bed I like to pretend I’m actually at the vineyards instead of tripping over Hot Wheels as I make my way to collapse on the couch. Thank you so much #stollerwines for providing me a mini-escape back to Oregon (especially since I was pregnant when I was there and couldn’t partake). Happy wine Wednesday wine lovers!

We continue to introduce Oregon wine to you. The wine of the day is viognier we discovered on our most recent visit to Willamette Valley winery Dominio IV

Viognier Still Life 2019 by dominio4 reflects the winemaker's artistic personality. Patrick Reuter, the winemaker, and the co-owner of Dominio IV, not just makes wines, but designs labels for each bottle as well.

"Still Life" 2019 is made with the Viognier grapes sourced from Southern Oregon's Rogue Valley. It was aged in 100% neutral barrels.
Typically, we taste the wine first and later check the back label for the winemaker's wine notes. We were surprised how close our description was to what we read on the label.
We sensed the aromas of tropical fruits, lemon flesh, white flowers, and apricot skin. On the palate, it's dominated by peach, orange, and lemon.
"Still Life" Viognier has a substantial body, higher acidity than we expected, and an orange aftertaste.

The orange-like profile of "Still Life" calls for appetizers and salads with oranges, tomatoes, and parsley. And we paired it with fish dish accompanied with parsley (see the previous post)

Did you know that there are two new AVAs in Oregon?
Tualatin Hills and the Laurelwood District are located in the northern end of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, in the heart of Oregon’s Pinot Noir producing zone.

The 33,600-acre Laurelwood District AVA covers the northern slopes of the Chehalem Mountains AVA, including Cornelius, Scholls and Sherwood.

Laurelwood soils consist of a fine windblown soil called loess. It consists predominantly of silt-sized sediment formed by the accumulation of wind-blown dust and was produced by the grinding down of basaltic and other volcanic rocks by glaciers during the last ice age.

This soil produces Burgundian styled Pinot Noir wines with flavors of cherry, blackberry, and spice. These wines are lighter and elegant with well-defined tannins. They are different than the earthier, more robust, black fruit centered styles of Oregon’s sedimentary soils.

The 144.000-acre Tualatin Hills AVA is the northernmost location within the Willamette Valley.

The AVA petition, filed in 2015, was led by Alfredo Apolloni of Apolloni Vineyards, Rudy Marchesi of Montinore Estate and Mike Kuenz of David Hill Vineyard and Winery.
The petition to the TTB to recognize the unique geology of the area and its iconic wines, was made in 2016 by Ponzi Vineyards and Dion Vineyard.

We have tasted wines from both AVAs, but now we plan to make a tasting comparing them to other sub-regions of Willamette Valley.

What is in your glass today?

I’ve completely eliminated drinking wine during the week, so come Thursday, I’m excited to pick out my weekend bottle. Tomorrow I’ll be sipping on this 2015 L’Altra Linea Dundee Hills Pinot Noir from furiosovineyard. I picked this up in the tasting room over a year ago so my memory is foggy on the details and notes, but I must have liked it to bring it home!🤷‍♀️🍷

What would you choose if you have a successful career in computer graphic animation and want to make wine too? Thane Hawkins took a chance and founded Hawkins Cellars.
It didn't happen overnight. During a six month leave of absence, Thane relocated to Oregon. At first, he began making wine out of his garage, and while results were mixed, his passion for winemaking grew.

He set out to get hands-on experience by enrolling in Chemeketa College's viticulture program and working harvest at Wine By Joe. In 2007, Methven Family Vineyards hired Thane to be their assistant winemaker. While working for Methven, he had an opportunity to produce a small batch of his own wine. And thus, Hawkins Cellars was born.
In the spring of 2011, Hawkins Cellars opened a tasting room in downtown Dundee in Willamette Valley of Oregon. The following year Thane Hawkins quits his job in computer graphic animation to give it all to winemaking.

In 2013 Hawkins Cellars planted Pinot Noir on Underwood Mountain and established Cloud Cap vineyard. To mark their tenth anniversary, they opened a second tasting room at this estate location in 2017. The same year Travel + Leisure magazine recognized Hawkins Cellars as Top Rated winery in the Pacific Northwest.

hawkinscellars produce a diverse range of wines from crisp whites and bubbles, to Pinot Noir and bold reds. On our visit to the winery, a few wines caught our attention: 2018 TruNorth White, 2015 Pinot Noir Yamhill-Carlton AVA, and 2016 Caldera Red.
In our most recent winery story we share our tasting notes and even more!
Video interview the Hawkins Cellars team including the winemaker Thane Hawkins! (Make sure to watch till the end to find our more intimate details about his life in the wine country)

How does wine lover's perfect day look like? We imagine a lot of scenarios! How does your perfect day look like?

For us one of those days is...

A day in Willamette Valley...
When the smoke dissapeared we traveled to Willamette Valley and discovered that it is still beautiful, Oregon pinot noirs are amazing, and wine still connects people despite all unfortunate events.
We learned more about consequences of smoke for the vineyards and the harvest, and, of course, we brought back some pinots!

As we mentioned in our most recent article about Oregon 2020 Vintage Preview, each winery and winemaker has their own approach to smoke taint. Some didn't harvest grapes yet and letting it hang, some are experimenting with small batches, and some gave up making wine this year all together.

Whatever desicion they make, we know it is a difficult one!

We will be updating the article as we collect more details. So, stay tuned, and subscribe to our newsletter!

Have you tried Oregon Chardonnay yet?
If you did, the chances are that it came from Willamette Valley, which is considered the best for Chardonnay in Oregon.
If you didn't, and you are a Chardonnay fan, then you should. In our view, it has terroir hallmarks that make it distinctly Willamette Valley. Some may even challenge the wines of the famous French village of Meursault.

In our most recent article we published on our blog we noted some fine examples of Oregon Chardonnay we tasted in 2020.

Among them:
domainedrouhinoregon
brickhousevineyards
rocowinery
matzingerdavies
delancellottiwines

Are you a bigger fan of the cool Oregon vintages (or in the case of this 2013, the more challenging variety) or the warm and idyllic growing seasons like we saw in 2012?⁣

Given the ‘drink now’ moment we collectively find ourselves in, we’ve received more requests for wines from the library, those with some bottle age that are evolving towards their peak drinking window. On our site (link in bio) you’ll find a small, curated list of options, including both of these gems — our flagship wine from the underdog 2013 vintage that is starting to spread its wings, and a few examples from the inaugural version of our vineyard designate series from the vaunted 2012 vintage. The best of both worlds, ready for a closeup.⁣

Local friends keep in mind our curbside pickup program at the winery, as well our free local delivery option on new orders. Stay safe, be well, drink well!⁣

Happy Monday, wine lovers!

Isn't it a great day to discover something new in the wine world?

On our last winer swinging trip to Willamette Valley we visited dominio4 . There are lots of cool facts about this winery, but let's talk about Dominio IV Imagination Series labels first!

Because one of the things that attracted us to visit Dominio IV is their creative approach to labels. We were intrigued by the dynamic label designs of Imagination Series wine.
As it came out, Patrick, the winemaker, draws and designs them himself when he tastes the wine. His synergy between wine, taste, and art is inspiring. And those are not just free-form wiggles.
Each label image reflects specific aspects of the wine: fruit, acidity, sweetness, tannin, body, and finish. Think tasting notes in the picture.

We found this approach very interesting! What do you think?

If you would like to learn more about this winery, visit our website and read the full story we just published!

Why is the “noir” lowercase in this (and only this) vintage of the Beaux Frères Vineyard portfolio?
~~~
Recently, a great friend of ours, Rich Schaefer (thewinewedrink), was enjoying this exact wine and sent along this question. According to Michael “The Dad” Etzel, our founding partner, the answer is shrouded slightly by time, given the nearly twenty years since the one-off decision was made.
~~~
He remembers being momentarily swayed by the rationale of none other than Papa Pinot himself, David Lett, whose eyrievineyards bottles presented (as they still do to this day) what many argue is the accurate grammatical spelling of the varietal. As for why this change only stuck for one vintage, the decision to return to the version we had traditionally used and continue to employ - “Pinot Noir” - seems to have been a purely aesthetic decision.
~~~
While an argument around grammar may be the last thing some of us want to pair with our Pinot, we’d love to hear some perspective from both sides of the aisle. Where does this debate stand today?
What do you think of when you hear someone's doing small-batch fermentation of wine? Probably, a garage or home winemaker comes to mind. Maybe a small urban or boutique winery.
In the fall of 2020, small-batch fermentation is a trend that sweeping even large commercial wineries in Willamette Valley and other parts of Oregon, Washington, and even California. And they are doing it out of necessity rather than fun like home winemakers would.
In early September, the heavy smoke from wildfires covered almost all of Oregon for over a week. it happened close to harvest, and it may have devastating consequences for many vineyards and wineries due to possible "smoke taint" in wine.
What is Smoke Taint?
Smoke taint means that wine can acquire undesirable aromas and flavors, such as burned rubber, bacon, disinfectant, or wet ashtray. Few wine lovers, if any, would enjoy, and no winemaker wants to make such wine.
Ideally, winemakers would like to test grapes at the lab. However, because smoke affected so many West Coast wine regions, there's a long backlog at the labs, and time is something winemakers don't have because the grapes may overripen while they wait for the results.
That's why many winemakers turned to small-batch fermentation to assess how much grapes affected by smoke and whether they can make high-quality wine in 2020.
We hope unpleasant smoke will never end up in your glass of wine!
Happy Monday, wine lovers!
