MEMORIAL WEEKEND IN THE WINE COUNTRY

The next Memorial Weekend in the Wine Country will take place on May 25-27, 2019. The kickoff to tasting season is full of excitement. This is your chance to sample newly released white wines,  rosés, and Pinot noir from the acclaimed 2017 vintage, sample 2018s in barrel and discover small producers not typically open to the public.

On Memorial Day we honor members of the military who lost their lives while serving. Look for the ✮ symbol indicating wineries offering a discount to veterans and current members of the armed forces.

Our winemaking team has been busy processing the fruit coming in as Harvest continues as scheduled. Early Chardonnay grapes were picked and pressed a few weeks ago ready to become part of our 2020 sparkling wine vintage 👏🏼

Why is the “noir” lowercase in this (and only this) vintage of the Beaux Frères Vineyard portfolio?
~~~
Recently, a great friend of ours, Rich Schaefer (thewinewedrink), was enjoying this exact wine and sent along this question. According to Michael “The Dad” Etzel, our founding partner, the answer is shrouded slightly by time, given the nearly twenty years since the one-off decision was made.
~~~
He remembers being momentarily swayed by the rationale of none other than Papa Pinot himself, David Lett, whose eyrievineyards bottles presented (as they still do to this day) what many argue is the accurate grammatical spelling of the varietal. As for why this change only stuck for one vintage, the decision to return to the version we had traditionally used and continue to employ - “Pinot Noir” - seems to have been a purely aesthetic decision.
~~~
While an argument around grammar may be the last thing some of us want to pair with our Pinot, we’d love to hear some perspective from both sides of the aisle. Where does this debate stand today?
We’re seeing an exceptional amount of site diversity this vintage, with Mother Nature looking poised to deliver a beautiful burst of energy as we approach the finish line. Just about ready to pull the anchors up and set sail on 2020!
Winemaker, Katie Santora and her dog, Mani headed up to walk the Ridgecrest Vineyard this morning and sample some of the ripening fruit. Planted in 1990, Ridgecrest was the first vineyard in what would be the famed Ribbon Ridge AVA. Located in a cooler microclimate, Ridgecrest tends to be about a week later – from bud break through harvest – than our other estate vineyards. It is planted to seven different Pinot Noir clones. The wines from this site tend to be big and brambly, with black-fruit aromas and flavors like blackberry, and black cherry. A wine club favorite, we can’t wait to see what the 2020 vintage brings!
ABOUT THE ARTIST
For more than a decade, the Willamette Valley Wineries Association has been honored to work with Portland-based artist John Fisher for original Memorial Weekend in Wine Country art.
John pairs his artistic vision with years of graphic design experience to create inspiring, sophisticated landscapes and figurative work. His landscapes have a definitive sense of place, allowing you to feel the emotion and mood of the day with his intuitive use of color and brushwork. The shifting force of weather has a profound impact on his work and ability to capture the soul of the Pacific Northwest landscape. John is an art director and designer in Portland, Oregon, originally hailing from Omaha, Nebraska. A graduate of the University of Kansas Fine Art program, he developed a passion for landscape painting while exploring the back roads and open plains of the Midwest. When not in the studio designing, he is likely to be roaming the countryside, capturing Northwest landscapes on canvas.
