About
The Van Duzer Corridor is an anomaly in the Coast Range through which oceanic winds funnel into the Valley, creating a cooling effect that occurs as early as 2:00 in the afternoon. This breeze dries out the vine canopy and decreases fungus pressure, making the area highly attractive for grape growing and supporting sustainable practices by drastically reducing the need for fungus spray. As a phenomenon of wind protection, the grape skins thicken, leading to an abundance of anthocyanins (color) and tannin.
The buffering effect is highly noticeable and varies from one vintage to another. When nearby regions of the Willamette Valley face overly warm conditions, this area is usually slightly cooler. The opposite is also true; when the nearby regions of the Willamette Valley face below-average temperatures during the growing season, this area receives generous mild air from the ocean, tempering the cold. These combined effects allow for near-perfect growing conditions with highly consistent quality.
Within the 35.9 square mile triangle that composes the Van Duzer Corridor, nearly 1,000 acres are occupied by 18 commercial vineyards and 6 bonded wineries.

Van Duzer Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon, 2017
I love when an AVA’s name sounds exactly what it was named for. The Van Duzer Corridor is a gap in Oregon’s Coastal Range (slide right to see map), which funnels cold Pacific Ocean winds into this part of the Willamette Valley. You can almost hear the wind as you say “Van Duzer!” In 2019, the Van Duzer Corridor (VCD) officially became a nested AVA within the Willamette Valley AVA.
VDC has 1,000 acres under vine, spread across 18 vineyards and 6 wineries. The region sees 50% more wind and is 15°F colder than the northern Willamette Valley – which means harvest can occur up to a month later. The soil is mostly clay and sediment, giving rise to bright, high-toned fruit and iodine notes in both its red (mostly Pinor noir) and white (mostly Chardonnay) wines.
In 1998, Carl and Marilynn Thoma were one of the first to plant in the area. Their estate, VanDuzerVineyards sits atop a knoll, surrounded on three sides by 84 acres that lie in the direct path of marine winds. The ocean air reduces disease pressure and moderates heat in the vineyard, creating a long growing season. The vineyards (and its winery) are certified LIVE (Low Input Viticulture and Enology), as well as Salmon-Safe, and IOBC (International Organization for Biological and Integrated Control). Winemaker Florent Merlier vinifies each of the clone-specific lots individually – amazing!
Today, I’m tasting their classic Pinot noir, whose exquisite label features Zephyra, the Greek goddess of west wind. It is 100% Pinot noir from four different clones.
👁: Clear pale ruby, rising garnet
👃: Clean, medium intensity, dark cherry, ripe raspberry, bramble, vanilla, black tea, sweet floral
👄: Dry, medium – acid, medium – body, cranberry, black tea, raspberry licorice, black currant fruit leather, a hint of fresh herbs (sweet oregano or thyme), and silky, chalky tannins that hover on the roof of your mouth near the front.
This wine is growing on me by the minute! A definite high #QPR from a sustainability-focused winery!
Price: $22

2018 Ribolla Gialla from the very wonderful human beings Ross and Bee Maloof. .
.
It's no secret how much I love what's going on in Oregon these days, and maloofwines is one of the big reasons why. This comes from the Johan Vineyard in the relatively new Van Duzer Corridor AVA, with all that cool Pacific Ocean breeze. .
.
Not a lot of Ribolla Gialla in the US (not really a lot in Italy either), but I feel like this really highlights what they've got goin on at Maloof Wines - orange and clove, big round mouthfeel, plenty of acid to keep it from being flabby, and a beautiful herb and honey finish. Paired with Indian food like a pro. .
.
Biodynamic farming, minimal intervention, simply gorgeous wine. .
.

2018 Maloof Wines Beddia Bianco
Maloof Wines is a fun, lively, and somewhat exploratory winery established in 2015 by husband and wife duo Ross and Bee Maloof. Situated in Forest Grove, Oregon, Maloof produces single vineyard wines mainly with often overlooked white grape varieties sourced from their estate vineyard No Clos Radio or other vineyard partners. Before crafting these wines, Bee worked in the aerospace industry as a materials science engineer and Ross gained a penchant for winemaking first after working in dining establishments and later working a harvest in the Willamette Valley. As wacky as some might consider the wines (particularly after reading some of their entertaining tasting notes), the end goal is to produce fun, lighthearted wines through minimal intervention in order to showcase each unique vineyard site and its farmers.
The 2018 Beddia Bianco is deep hazy gold/amber in color, actually reminiscent of an apricot. I must say this was a tough wine to taste at first, namely for the fact that upon first whiff you feel like you are about to enjoy an effervescent wine that really is not. Perhaps it’s the way this leaps from the glass with clean veracity and precision… Nonetheless, the nose does reveal captivating aromas of orange marmalade, marzipan, apricot, white florals, honey, finely crushed stone, and brioche. There’s some barnyard there too upon opening, but it largely blows off. Moving to the palate, I travel further into the adventure with notes of peach, yellow apple, melon, stone fruit, banana laffy taffy, snap pea, mineral, yeast, and lightly buttered toast. The wine is medium- to full-bodied with medium (+) acidity into a well-rounded long finish, leaving one both perplexed and yearning for that next sip. This is a very fun and weird wine. 81 cases produced.
85% Chardonnay, 15% Pinot Gris; 12% ABV
Price: $32. This is a tough wine to discuss in regards to value, but I assure you that I cannot recommend it enough for the adventurous side of wine. Wines like this provide remembrance of the uniqueness, broadness, and power of the wine world which can help break up our often mundane tasting experiences.

Oh👏 my👏 goodness!!! We’re so grateful to work for such an excellent wine company. After more than two decades of winemaking together, in our beloved Willamette Valley, Bryan and I are able to completely focus our energies on crafting the finest wine, from the very best grapes we can possibly grow, complemented with fruit we bring in from our many years of cultivating meaningful relationships with our dear wine grape growing farmers. These kinds of accolades are by no measure the most important thing about making great wine together. These awards, for the three wines we make, from the two varietals that have created the world-wide renown garnered to our Oregon AVA, is humbling and gratifying. #criticschallengeinternationalwinecompetition #banfiwinesusa #pinotnoir #pinotgris #willamettevalley #viticulture #rosé #rainstormwines #greatwinebeginsinthevineyard #vanduzercorridorava #eolaamityhillsava #willamettevalleywine #pacificrimandco
